What is Plumbsmarter?

The aim of the PlumbSmarter project was to identify strategies for tackling environmental sustainability through changing the framework and operation of the Victorian plumbing industry - and to begin pursuit of the strategies. The intention was to provide sufficient detail for in-principle approval of the strategies by government and industry leaders. The Plumbsmarter report:  Path to a Greener Plumbing Industry outlines Plumbsmarter's scope.

Plumbsmarter Aims

The aims of the project are:

  • Industry agreement about the best water and energy saving opportunities
  • A powerful report to the responsible Ministers
  • Changes in regulations to improve sustainability
  • The plumbing industry taking a further step forward in its sustainable practices.

Plumbers Help Victoria Save Water and Energy

The PlumbSmarter initiative, which commenced in 2007, offered plumbers a unique opportunity to have their say about water and energy saving. More than 600 contributions of ideas to help Victoria better adapt to drought and climate change were collated. The PlumbSmarter team thanks the many Victorian plumbers who responded to the project with enthusiastic and helpful responses. It has grouped the ideas into eight areas for action:

  • Sustainability as the everyday work of plumbers
  • Sustainability skills for Victorian plumbing
  • Innovation gateway
  • Knowledge bank
  • Hot water systems
  • Fire sprinklers
  • Swimming pools
  • Sustainable plumbing system designs

More information on each of these actions can be found in the Plumbsmarter report: The Path to a Greener Plumbing Industry.
