6 Star Standard
From 1 May 2011, the 6 Star Standard was introduced in Victoria to align with the national energy efficiency measures in the Building Code of Australia (BCA) - Volumes One and Two of the National Construction Code (NCC) Series.
The 6 Star Standard applies to the thermal performance of a new home, home renovations, alterations, additions and relocations plus the requirement to install a solar water heater system or a rainwater tank for toilet flushing in new homes.
The thermal performance features the home's building fabric - it's roof, walls, floors and windows. Efficiency standards also apply to fixed lighting but not for plug in appliances provided by homeowners.
The requirements to install a solar water heater system or a rainwater tank for toilet flushing are set out in the Plumbing Regulations 2008 and apply to all new Class 1 buildings.
