Types of greywater systems
There are two types of greywater systems:
- Untreated greywater for immediate use, diverted from a wastewater system
- Installed systems that collect and treat greywater.
Both systems must be installed by a licensed plumbing practitioner. Restrictions apply to the systems that collect and treat greywater. These systems require approval from the Environmental Protection Authority for use and your local council must issue a septic tank permit before installation.
A $500 Victorian Government rebate is available if you install a permanent greywater system that recycles wastewater from laundries and bathrooms for use on the garden or for toilet flushing. Visit www.ourwater.vic.gov.au for details and further information on rebates.
